The Disadvantages of Air Bags

Most people consider air bags to be a safety feature. It is true that safety bags were invented to help protect passengers and drivers in the event of an accident. However, not everyone believes that air bags are a safety feature or can always promote safety in the event of a serious accident.

There are many risks associated with a high-speed car accident or impact. Air bags typically take less than one second to deploy. The force of this can lead to damage in rare instances. For example, when an air bag deploys, it has the power to break someone’s neck or other body part, particularly because of the speed with which an air bag deploys and because of the surprise factor with which most air bags deploy. Typically this will only happen if a passenger is not positioned correctly or has slid forward in their seat.

Air Bag Malfunctions

Other problems that can go wrong with air bags include computer malfunctioning. There are risks associated with passengers that may not meet the height qualifications for air bags. In cases like this, studies suggest that an air bag may malfunction and instead of saving a life, may actually cause injury or death.

Short-statured individuals may be at risk for injury when using a vehicle with air bags. Air bags also sometimes provide individuals with a false sense of security. Some car passengers fail to use their seat belt, believing that the air bag is strong enough to protect them in the event of an accident. However most studies that are conducted using airbags are done with the air bag and a safety belt. For an air bag to work properly, it must be used in conjunction with a lap belt.

Air bags can also deploy when cars crash going very slowly. Some vehicles have had air bags deploy in instances where a car bumped another car going at a rate of 10mpg or slower. This can cause extensive damage resulting in repairs costing $400 to $2000 in damage.
