Chrysler's origin goes back to 1913, when the Maxwell Motor Company, Incorporated, was formed. After a few setbacks, a man named Walter P Chrysler was brought to take a look at the company in 1920. Chrysler first started as an apprentice in a railroad machine shop before working his way up to become the plant manager for the American Locomotive Company and then a manager for the Buick Motor company. By 1916, he became the president of the Buick Motor Company.

Shortly after Chrysler was brought to revitalize the company, Chrysler bought control and by 1924 he produced the first car with his name, the Chrysler 70. In 1925, the Maxwell Motor company became the Chrysler Corporation and Chrysler became its president. In the years that followed, Chrysler expanded by acquiring other companies, including the Fargo truck company, the Dodge Brothers Company. It also established the Plymouth and the DeSoto automobile brands. Also, in 1987, Chrysler acquired the American Motors Company and thus got control of the Jeep brand. In 1998, the Chrysler Corporation and the Diamler-Benz merged together, but despite a few profitable years, the merger did not last long and by 2007 the merger came to an end. In 2008, thanks to the Troubled Assets Relief Program, the company was given a brief relief but in 2009, the company filed for bankruptcy.
